I enjoy this painting for several reasons. First of all I love painting subjects I can personally relate to. Some of my fondest child hood memories are from days going out feeding with my dad--struggling to toss a bale onto a higher stack - seeing 100 horses break 3 feet of fresh snow - the sound of hay peeling off and the thud when it hits the ground. Secondly, I'm intrigued by this scene because I had the chance to work with strong silhouette shapes. If you look at the great illustrators, most of their art features strong silhouette shapes. The reason being is that it had to catch a persons' attention quickly and often from a distance. Lastly, there's something about seeing an object suspended in mid air that gets my imagination firing. I can see 5 seconds into the past and 5 seconds into the future. I see the man turning for another bale and the other person re-positioning the thrown one.
